In taste tests carried out by the R.A.E.A. (Andalusian agronomy experimental centre) on the varieties of strawberries grown in 2006, Sabrosa was the only current variety to score 'good' or 'very good' for taste, whether soil-grown or hydroponic. Similarly, analysing the Brix levels (directly related to the taste of the fruit) shows that Sabrosa has on average a significantly higher level than the other Spanish varieties tested. This is clear proof that Sabrosa is the Spanish strawberry variety that stands out in terms of taste!
The Sabrosa strawberry is a low-calorie fruit: only 45 kcal for a 150 g portion (average single portion). In addition to its low fat and protein content, it also contains little sugar (7-9 %, while the average for fruit is 10-14 %), making it a good basis for light, tasty dishes. And it has the lowest sugar content when compared to the other Spanish varieties currently on the market (Ventana, Camarosa, Festival). So Sabrosa is the Spanish strawberry that stands out for its low sugar content too!
The Sabrosa strawberry is particularly high in vitamin C - on average 60 mg per 100 g. This ranks it among the fruits that contain the most vitamin C, alongside the citrus fruits, and way ahead of certain other common fruits. Eating 150 g of strawberries will give you all of your guideline daily amount of vitamin C! Guideline daily amount of vitamin C: 80 mg for adults.
More generally, antioxidants (including vitamin C and polyphenols) are
essential for human health, in preventing cardio-vascular disease and cancers
(Hyson 2002). The Sabrosa strawberry contains on average more polyphenols and
vitamin C than the other Spanish strawberry varieties on the market (Ventana,
Festival, or Camarosa). For example, the total antioxidant content in Sabrosa
is 12 % higher than the Camarosa, while polyphenols are 22 % higher.
Making Sabrosa the Spanish strawberry that stands out for its polyphenol
content as well!
